COEUR d'ALENE - Before his at-bat in the fourth inning, Coeur d'Alene center fielder Jason Pattis asked the others in the Lumbermen dugout if anyone else's swing felt good on Tuesday afternoon.

On the next pitch Pattis saw, he delivered a key two-run home run to center field to lift the Lumbermen past the Lewis-Clark Twins 9-6 in the first game of a class AA North Idaho League American Legion baseball doubleheader at McEuen Field.

"I thought it was off the wall," Pattis said. "Once I saw it I kept sprinting, but once it went over the fence, I just sprinted around the bases."

In the second game, Colin Comack and Joe Roletto had two RBIs each as the Lumbermen completed the sweep with a 9-4 victory.

Pattis also singled with nobody out in the sixth to finish with three RBIs in the opener.

"The ball was coming in like a beach ball today," Pattis said. "I could see the ball really well out of the pitcher's hands."

"Jason has been hitting extremely well as of late," Coeur d'Alene coach Lloyd Duman said. "He's really been working on hitting on the lines. He's becoming more comfortable in the No. 2 spot in the lineup and it's been working well for us."

Coeur d'Alene extended its winning streak to 13 games and improved to 15-3, 6-0 in league.

"We've been playing with confidence all year," Pattis said. "Everyone is playing well and doing their job really well."

Lewis-Clark opened the scoring in the bottom of the first as catcher Kyle Knigge hit a solo home run. Comack doubled leading off the first for Coeur d’Alene and came around to tie the game on an RBI groundout by Mitch Bevacqua.

Grant Curtis put Coeur d’Alene up for good with an RBI double in the second inning and added another RBI double in the third.

“Grant’s had a hot bat to start the season,” Duman said. “He goes in waves, but if he stays short on his swings, he’s pretty deadly.”

Comack had five strikeouts for Coeur d’Alene in the first game and added a two-run single in the second inning of the nightcap.

“We knew we had to get some from them tonight,” Duman said. “We took care of our league business and now we’ll turn our attention to some tournaments. Once we get through the league once, then we can look ahead.”

Randy Fuller hit a three-run home run in the fifth inning for Lewis and Clark (6-4, 3-3), which travels to Prairie today for a doubleheader starting at 4 p.m.

“I’ve got to tip my hat to the Cd’A team,” said first-year Lewis-Clark coach Kent Knigge, who replaced longtime coach Tom Grunenfelder. “They swung the bats well and took advantage of our pitchers getting the ball up in the strike zone. They were a lot more crisp than we were today. At this point, they’re a better team than we are.”

Coeur d’Alene opens the Bandit Bash tournament on Thursday against the Walla Walla Bears at 4 p.m. at La Pierre Field in Kennewick, Wash.
