Suspect in park vandalism caught
SPIRIT LAKE - A 15-year-old Spirit Lake teen has been charged with vandalizing the City Park's restrooms that were funded by a community fundraiser.
During a routine security check last Tuesday, a Spirit Lake officer discovered painting on the wall and toilet seat of the men's restroom.
"The writing was expletive in nature," Spirit Lake Police Chief Pat Lawless said.
Lawless began talking with juveniles who frequent the park.
"Eventually I had enough to confront the suspect," he said. "He tried to deny it, but got himself caught up in the story and couldn't get out."
The paint has been removed.
The restrooms were funded by proceeds from The Big Back-In lawnmower races held annually on Father's Day.
"Needless to say, there were a few upset people about the incident," Lawless said. "Because of the history behind how the restrooms were built and given to the city, I took it very seriously and wanted to get closure on the matter as fast as possible."
