A 19-year-old Desmet woman pleaded guilty to involuntary manslaughter on Tuesday in U.S. District Court.

Andrea M. George, through tears, admitted killing 22-year-old Patrick A. Gourneau, of Tensed, when she struck him with her 2002 Honda Accord on April 19, 2010, on Desmet Road.

Assistant U.S. Attorney Michael W. Mitchell said George had been drinking alcohol and had exceeded the speed limit before striking Gourneau.

Gourneau's body went through George's windshield, injuring her face. Ashley A. Justice, also of Desmet, a passenger in George's car, wasn't injured.

District Court Judge Edward Lodge said George faces up to eight years in prison for the felony, and three years of supervised release. She also faces a fine of up to $250,000.

Lodge scheduled sentencing for Sept. 7 in Coeur d'Alene. She is out of custody as she waits for sentencing.

A trial was scheduled to start on Tuesday, but her attorney, James Siebe, filed documents saying she planned to change her plea.

She entered a not guilty plea in November following a grand jury indictment.

Siebe said his client is suffering "post-traumatic amnesia," affecting her memory of the events on the morning of Gourneau's death.

According to the Idaho State Police, George was eastbound on Desmet Road when she crested a hill in a residential area and struck Gourneau, who was standing in the roadway. He died on the scene, at the intersection of Desmet and Ajot roads on the Coeur d'Alene Tribe's reservation.

For her injuries, George was flown to a Spokane hospital.
