I'd bet on God

COEUR d'ALENE - A Coeur d'Alene native is returning to his hometown this week, but he won't be himself.

He'll be God, the devil and Billy Markham.

Jonah Weston is playing all three roles in a production of "The Devil and Billy Markham" by Shel Silverstein.

Shows are 7:30 tonight, Saturday and Sunday at the Icon Underground, 317 Sherman Ave.

The play tells the story of Markham, a down-on-his luck, struggling country singer who is sitting in a bar when the devil walks in and asks who wants to gamble.

Nobody takes him up when Billy Markham steps up and says, "I'll roll the dice."

"Billy journeys from Nashville's Music Row down into the fiery pits of hell and back again as he matches wits with God, the Devil and everyone in between," according to a press release.

Laura Sable of Coeur d'Alene worked with Weston in the '90s when he was a volunteer at the Lake City Playhouse.

"Even as a kid, Jonah was a passionate volunteer and budding performer, but I could never have imagined he would emerge as such a powerful and mesmerizing force on-stage," she wrote.

Tickets are $12 in advance, $15 at the door.
