Whitefish Mountain Resort’s summer opener on Saturday has an unusual offering this year — lots and lots of snow.

The resort is encouraging visitors to bring their snowshoes along if they plan to hike up the mountain or take the Big Mountain Express gondola to the summit, where snow drifts of up to eight feet or so linger.

“It’s kind of a unique opening,” resort spokeswoman Riley Polumbus said. “The Summit House will be open so people can check out the snow and have lunch. There’s plenty of snow to make a snowman.”

The snow hasn’t been measured at the summit recently, but Polumbus estimated drifts of five to eight feet.

Skis, snowboards and mountain bikes won’t be allowed on the gondola, she said, but mountain biking can be done on the lower trails.

The resort’s major summer attractions, including the Alpine Slide, Zip Line Tours and Walk in the Tree Tops, will open on Saturday.

Zip Line prices are discounted through June 30, with a $39 admission for the 4-Zip tour, which lasts about two hours; and $54 for the 6-Zip tour of about three hours.

The 6-Zip features a 1,800-foot-long line suspended 300 feet above the ground. It’s available to riders of all ages between 100 and 230 pounds who are at least 54 inches tall; extended hiking is required.

The 4-Zip accommodates riders of all ages between 60 and 230 pounds and at least 54 inches tall. It involves a moderate amount of hiking.

Those taking the Alpine Slide may pass a snowbank or two during the trip, Polumbus said. The slide is open to all ages; children under 48 inches tall ride for free but must share a sled with an adult.

The base area is clear of snow, and all amenities will be open, including the Base Lodge that features a new bar. In the village area, Hellroaring Saloon, the Bierstube and Aunt Bee’s will be open.
