SPOKANE - One night after being on the receiving end of a 14-2 rout to open the season, the Spokane Indians rebounded with a 7-2 victory over the Salem-Keizer Volcanoes in Northwest League baseball action in front of 6,209 at Avista Stadium on Saturday night.
Hanser Alberto's two-run double highlighted a six-run fourth inning for the Indians (1-1).
Spokane's Broxton Lane went 3 for 4 with an RBI and scored twice.
Indians starter Victor Payano pitched four scoreless innings, giving up two hits and four walks while striking out three in a no-decision. Juan Grullon pitched a scoreless fourth and fifth inning to earn the win.
The two teams play the third of their five-game series at 3:30 p.m. today at Avista.
Ron Jackson and Spokane County have been named as the Indians' 2011 Rim of Honor recipients.
The team created the Rim of Honor in 2007 to honor individuals and organizations that have contributed positively to the Indians both on and off the field. There are four permanent members of the Rim of Honor, including Dwight Aden, Levi McCormack, Maury Wills, and Tommy Lasorda, with two non-players added to the Rim of Honor annually.
Ron Jackson played second base for the Indians in 1956 and batted .322. He hit four doubles in a game on two separate occasions, an Indians record that still stands to the day. Ron made his biggest impact on the baseball community by coaching American Legion Baseball in Spokane for 23 years, from 1960-83, and as a recreational youth baseball coach until the late 1990s.
Spokane County, as the owner of Avista Stadium, has worked hard to preserve and improve one of the top minor league baseball stadiums in the country. Improvements under Spokane County include the addition of a new press box, skyboxes, the Banner Bank Diamond Club, and numerous other stadium improvements.
