Dorothy Marie Vogel, 85
Coeur d'Alene Press | UPDATED 14 years, 6 months AGO
Dorothy Marie Vogel, better known by her nickname "Montana," passed away June 16, 2011, at her home in Coeur d'Alene. Dottie was born Sept. 15, 1925, in Hot Springs, S.D., to John Baptiste and Marie Provost.
She had one brother, Alonzo, who preceded her in death as did her only child, Patricia Marie Nelson.
She is survived by a grandson, Dale Lynn Vogel of California; a niece, Cindy Provost of California; cousins Linda B. Morris, Eric Morris, Coeurd Morris, Alene Sumner, Mrs. Blain Pratt, Sheila Pratt and Brian Pratt, all of Coeur d'Alene.
Dottie's father was Oglala Sioux and she was very proud of her Indian heritage. She loved to tell about her grandfather, Charles "Count" Provost who was a scout, fought in the Battle of Wounded Knee and rode with Buffalo Bill shows. Perhaps this is where she inherited her skill as an expert archer.
She was affectionately known to some as "Skipper," earning her pilots license from the Coast Guard while living in California and piloting a boat named "Dottie Sioux" to take friends on fishing trips after returning to her beloved Idaho.
Montana requested cremation and no memorial service conducted.
Her many friends here in Idaho will certainly miss her!
