Lums split with Trail; Prairie swept by Twins

TRAIL, British Columbia - Grant Curtis went 4 for 4 with two RBIs as the Coeur d'Alene Lumbermen defeated the Trail Bandits 12-4 in the first game before Garrett Kucher pitched a complete game five-hitter as the Jays took the nightcap of a class AA North Idaho League doubleheader 3-1 at Butler Park on Tuesday.
Pete Hoffman was 3 for 5 and Jason Pattis 2 for 4 with a home run in the first game for Coeur d'Alene.
"We hit the ball pretty well in the first game," Coeur d'Alene coach Lloyd Duman said.
Colin Comack had six strikeouts in the first game for Coeur d'Alene.
Trail scored the first two runs in the second game and held on late for the win.
"Grant started a little shaky on the mound, but settled down after the second inning," Duman said. "We just never got the offense going in that game. We hit the ball hard, it just didn't land."
Coeur d'Alene (17-8, 7-1 NIL) opens the Best of the Northwest tournament today against the Spokane Blue Devils at 4:30 p.m. and Reality Sports out of Seattle at 7 p.m. at McEuen Field.
Trail is 11-10, 7-2.

LEWISTON - Beau Kerns struck out seven in the opener and Kasey Knigge had two hits in the nightcap as the host Lewis-Clark Twins swept a class AA North Idaho League doubleheader against the Prairie Cardinals on Tuesday at Harris Field on the campus of Lewis-Clark State College.
"We came out aggressive and hit some balls hard, they were just right at them," Prairie coach Dustin Frank said.
Zach Carter and Kurt South had RBI singles in the seventh inning for Prairie in the first game.
In the second game, Tyler Burnett hit a two-run double in the sixth inning, but the Cardinals were done in by five errors.
"Offensively, we're swinging the stick, but we need to come together defensively," Frank said. "If we can get our defense and pitching together, we'll be a tough team."
Prairie (8-10, 4-5 NIL) competes in the Best of the Northwest tournament today at University High in Spokane, facing the Spokane Cannons and Spokane Heat.
Lewis-Clark improves to 11-7, 5-3.

COEUR d'ALENE - Kyle Parson hit a walk-off single with two outs in the seventh inning of the first game as the Coeur d'Alene Loggers split a class A North Idaho League doubleheader with the Lewis-Clark Cubs at McEuen Field on Tuesday.
D.J. Sutton had four RBIs and Sean Sutton had four hits for Coeur d'Alene, which won the opener 8-7.
"Resiliency is the name of this team," said Coeur d'Alene coach Tom Barlow, whose team won for the third time on a walk-off hit this season. "I hate to say wait until late, but they got the job done tonight."
Lewis-Clark took an early lead in the second game and went on to win 9-5.
"We just got started a little too late," Barlow said. "We finally made an adjustment, but after giving them six runs, it was too late to rally."
Parson and Jesse O'Hagan had two RBIs apiece for Coeur d'Alene (11-9, 4-2 league), which faces Yakima at Walla Walla Community College on Thursday at 3 p.m. to open the Walla Walla tournament.
