Otter: Back off our spuds
The Associated Press | Hagadone News Network | UPDATED 13 years, 7 months AGO
One of Idaho’s biggest politicians is stepping up to defend the
state’s biggest crop.
Gov. C.L. “Butch” Otter went on the defensive after a new Harvard
study published in the New England Journal of Medicine concluded
regularly eating potatoes contributes to weight gain.
Otter’s response? Duh!
Otter says regularly eating any kind of food irresponsibly can lead to
weight gain and health problems.
Otter also panned the study for failing to adequately explore the
nutritional value of spuds and unfairly singling out tubers as a
culprit to people being overweight and unhealthy. He says the study
conflicts with the understanding that weight gain is tied to calories
and exercise.
Idaho is the nation’s leading producer of potatoes, with growers
harvesting more than 11 billion pounds in 2009.
