The Kootenai County commissioners will hold a hearing tonight on a proposed science and technology school for youth.

Paul and Lorna Finman are continuing their efforts to build the Science, Technology and Research Center in Rathdrum, which would include a discovery exhibit and research labs to study agriculture, forestry, alternate energy and robotic farming.

"It's a very good positive addition to the community that will benefit children and families," Paul said on Tuesday.

The pair is seeking a conditional use permit through the county to construct the center.

The structure would sit on roughly 285 acres zone rural.

Taryn Hecker, spokeswoman for the Finmans' nonprofit Discovery Technology, said the group is ready to start building immediately, if the permit is approved.

"It's going to be such a positive thing for all of the students and the community," Hecker said.

The hearing is scheduled for 6 tonight in room 1 of the county Administration Building at 451 Government Way.
