Twins beat Mavericks - twice

The Glacier Twins snapped a four-year losing streak to conference foe Missoula on June 22 when they topped the Mavericks 10-8 in Class AA American Legion baseball play. It was the first victory for the Twins over the Mavericks since 2007. The Mavs had won the last 16 meetings.

Zach Maassen pitched seven strong innings in Missoula and allowed six runs. Missoula pulled within two in the ninth, but closer Carl Talsma struck out the final two batters with the bases loaded.Talsma finished 3-for-3 at the plate, including a double. Devyn Rocker tallied four RBIs on 3-for-4 hitting. The Twins tallied 13 total hits. Missoula was plagued by five fielding errors.

The next day, the Twins took down Missoula again in a 12-7 win, this time led by pitcher Cody Hill. Hill was solid on the mound and allowed only six runs in eight innings.

The Twins put up six runs in the first two innings and another four in the sixth frame to take control of the game. Kyler Blades and Cody Elek both went 2-for-4 at the plate. Devyn Rocker was 2-for-3, including two RBIs and a double. Geoff Streeter and Chris King each had RBIs in the game.

The Twins ran into trouble on June 26 when they traveled to Medicine Hat, Alberta, for a conference doubleheader. The Monarchs edged the Twins 12-9 and 10-8 after building big leads in each game.

The Twins return home (June 29) today when they host the Calgary Redbirds at 7 p.m. at Memorial Park, in Whitefish. They host Calgary again on Thursday, with a doubleheader starting at 1 p.m.

Whitefish Mountain Resort’s post-season uphill policy expired last week, but with significant snowfall and changing weather conditions, the resort reminds skier and hikers that avalanche hazards in the ski area’s permitted boundaries do exist.
