QUINCY- Quincy Valley Medical Center now owns one city block and is deciding how to best use the space.

"It was perfect opportunity that presented itself," says Michelle Wurl, community relations and marketing coordinator. "We're evaluating the use for it right now."

In December 2010, the Friends Church approached Quincy Valley Medical Center administrators about taking over the property, which includes a church building, house and surrounding property. Wurl says the purchase made sense for expansion purposes.

With the hospital transitioning to electronic medical record keeping this week, the space was needed for employee training.

Maintenance crews began painting and repairing the annex building.

"We all have use for the space," said Cyril Kincaid during the last board of commissioners meeting.

"We're still in the evaluation process of what are we going to do with this long term," says Wurl. "There are two structures involved, the former church property and a house that is also on the property. There is a wide array of ideas they are looking at."

The hospital's short-term goals for the space are to free up some of the hospital rooms, says Quincy Valley Medical Center Administrator, Mehdi Merred.

"Maybe we will open up those rooms for families, we don't know yet," said Merred.

Space for storage and training are potential uses, also, says Wurl.

Four contractors have submitted bids to do repair, maintenance and remodeling to the house.

Additionally, an anonymous donor from Quincy gave $100,000 to the hospital last month to help the facility with costs associated with owning the property.

"I appreciate the work which is happening here and the direction I see the facility going," say the donor. "I believe it's important to show that support and I am glad I am able to contribute to the long-term success of this facility. It is my hope and challenge to others in this community that they follow suit and provide backing for our local hospital as they are able."

Hospital board chairman Anthony Gonzales says the board of commissioners will look at contractor bids and take a tour of the facility at the next board meeting in March.
