for allegedly killing his 88-year-old mother, Edna Simmons.

MOSES LAKE - A Moses Lake man was arrested during the weekend for allegedly killing his 88-year-old mother, Edna Simmons.

Jack P. Simmons, 56, was charged with murder in the second degree in Grant County Superior Court Monday, according to court records.

Prosecutor Angus Lee requested $750,000 bail, saying Simmons has a prior convictions for assault in the fourth degree in 1991 previous charges with assault in the fourth degree, violating protection orders and harassment. 

"I point out that the defendant has six or seven prior (driving under the influence) convictions," he said. "He does have a recent (failure to appear) in Grant County District Court in 2010, and he has a rather lengthy history of being a suspect, a charged person and a convicted person in relation to assaults."

Grant County Superior Court Judge Evan Sperline agreed with Lee's recommendation, after defense attorney Arnaldo Cabrera reserved his argument on bail.

Jack Simmons is expected to enter a plea next Monday.

Dispatchers were contacted about midnight on Sunday by an anonymous caller claiming there was a person who was assaulted and died on West Sunset Drive, according to Moses Lake police Capt. Dave Ruffin. 

A short time later, dispatchers received a call from Jack Simmons. He allegedly said his mother passed away, Ruffin said. 

The mother and son lived together.

Moses Lake investigators responded to the call and reportedly found a suspicious amount of blood.

Jack Simmons allegedly gave several different versions about what transpired, Ruffin said.

The victim had what appeared to be trauma to her body, according to the police. 

"Based on what they found and the information they collected, Jack was arrested for second-degree murder," Ruffin said. 

It is his understanding no fights or disturbances were reported to dispatch before Edna Simmons' death.
