LAKES: Why such a popular race?
Coeur d'Alene Press | UPDATED 14 years, 7 months AGO
The upcoming election for Lakes Highway District Commissioners is interesting in that there seems to be two different teams running against the first term incumbents, Lekstrum and Montgomery. This is a three-person board so any two could take control.
I have seen the data on the improvements and the savings that have been achieved since the present commissioners took office, so I want to know why so many people want to replace them.
Perhaps we should look at who was getting all that money that was being spent before these savings were made. The ax that the team of Kraft and Fountain has to grind is pretty easy to figure out. They are a pair of disgruntled former employees.
The other team of Malcolm and Witherwax is harder to understand. Why would two longtime former employees with 33 and 22 years experience, respectively, of Oldcastle, which are the foreign owners of Central Pre-Mix/Interstate, want to be commissioners? Weren't they getting enough contracts from Lakes?
At the very least, I think the election of these two would smack of a conflict of interest. I urge everyone to vote for the present commissioners Lekstrum and Montgomery who have neither an ax to grind, nor any conflict of interest.
