SPOKANE - Lake City junior Matt Finney won the championship at No. 2 boys singles, and junior Luke Ness placed fourth at No. 1 boys singles at the 66th Inland Empire tournament which concluded Saturday.
Finney went 5-0 and did not drop a set, losing just 18 games in the tourney. He beat a player from Kennewick 6-1, 6-1 in the semifinals and one from Clarkston 6-1, 7-5 in the finals.
"Finney dominated," Lake City coach Tim Scott said. "He played really well, moved well and transitioned well. That was the first time we've ever had anybody win anything (at this tournament)."
Ness lost to the eventual champion from Wenatchee 6-0, 6-0 in the semifinals, then fell to Gonzaga Prep 6-1, 6-4 in the match for third and fourth places.
Seth Helbling and Ryan Tiffany finished third in the consolation bracket at No. 2 boys doubles.
'We had more guys in the final day of this tournament than we've ever had," Scott said, "and had more top-four finishers than we've ever had."
The Post Falls doubles team of Dan Schaefer and Loryn Seidl battled back in the No. 3 mixed doubles bracket to finish fifth.
"I was pretty excited to have the kids get some playing time before regionals," Post Falls coach Angela Blair said. "Dan and Loryn are a fairly new team. Loryn was dominating at the net and giving Dan a chance to do some new things."
Jordan Hernandez finished eighth at boys No. 1 singles for Post Falls, which hosts Lake City on Monday.
"Jordan was trying to execute so many other things today," Blair said. "He's just excited to get to play this year."
Sandpoint's Courtney Windju and Megan Rockwell won their first two matches to reach the semis of the main draw at No. 3 girls doubles, before earning two set points in a tough straight-set loss against Pullman and finishing fourth.
"These two are peaking at just the right time," Sandpoint coach Kent Anderson said. "Their speed, athleticism and strong net play makes it very difficult to beat them."
The No. 3 boys doubles team of Carson Nygren and Gerhart Suppiger scored wins over Lake City and Cheney on a weekend that featured snow, wind and rain on Friday, forcing pro sets in lieu of regulation matches.
Kevin Kirby and Sophia Meulenberg each notched a win in the No. 1 singles draws for the Bulldogs, while Kevin Bucalo and Amanda Hayes teamed up for two wins at No. 1 mixed doubles.
Sandpoint hosts Lakeland on Tuesday.
Clark Fork’s Nate Nesbitt and Stillman Berkley got a good tune-up for their quest for state 3A doubles hardware, winning all three of their matches to finish in fourth place in the No. 2 boys doubles draw.
The duo beat Lake City 8-2, Mead 8-6 and Pullman 8-6, an especially strong showing from a 1A school playing against powers from Washington.
“They had their best performance of their career so far,” said Wampus Cat coach Mary Jo Lambert, lauding their serving and net play. “If they play as well at state as they did Friday, they could finish in the top four.”
Brocklynn Thornton and Claire McMahon won twice and lost once at No. 2 girls doubles, employing the attacking net play that Lambert preaches to her team.
Tala Fehsel and Heather Wold won once and lost once at No. 3 girls doubles, Tristin Bristol and Zack Klein lost twice at No. 3 boys doubles, Lyndsie Kiebert and A. Blankenship lost twice at No. 1 mixed doubles and Jazmin Gabrie and Joe Cox lost twice at No. 2 mixed doubles.
The Wampus Cats are at Troy on Thursday.
