Auto racing

Will Power of Australia overcame a damaged car and a wet track to win IndyCar's Sao Paulo 300 on Monday, a day after the race was postponed because of heavy rain on the streets of South America's biggest city.

Graham Rahal was second and Ryan Briscoe third at the 2.5-mile, 11-turn Anhembi temporary street circuit.

Power, who started from the pole position, drove to victory for Penske after Japan's Takuma Sato had to pit for fuel with about 10 minutes left. Sato led for 23 laps but finished eighth after his gamble failed.

Power finished 4.672 seconds ahead of Rahal and 7.904 in front of teammate Briscoe. It was his second win in four races this season, giving him the points lead going into the Indy 500 later this month.

Baseball

The Mariners had Monday day off after returning from their road trip with a 5-and-1 record.

They'll begin a six-game home stand tonight (7 p.m., ROOT) in Safeco Field with three against the Texas Rangers and three against the Chicago White Sox.

After sweeping Detroit and winning their first two at Boston, the Mariners were hoping for another win in Sunday's game against the Red Sox. Felix Hernandez struck out 10 in seven innings but left with a no-decision.

After 15 scoreless innings, Seattle's bullpen gave up a run when Jamey Wright gave up the winning hit to Carl Crawford. That scored Jed Lowrie who had reached third on a fly ball that Ichiro Suzuki lost in the sun.

The trip improved Seattle's record to 13-16.

Football

With its players again barred from work, the NFL told a federal appeals court in Minneapolis the fight over whether the lockout is legal won't get in the way of the 2011 season.

The rest of the labor fight? That's anyone's guess.

The league filed an 18-page brief with the 8th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals in St. Louis, arguing that the lockout should remain in effect permanently while appeals play out.

The appeals court put U.S. District Judge Susan Richard Nelson's order lifting the 45-day lockout on hold temporarily last week. The owners reinstated the lockout a few hours later, and they want a more permanent stay of Nelson's order so they can argue that it should be overturned altogether.

The players have argued there is no guarantee appeals can be wrapped up in time for the regular season, but the NFL said the process - thanks to a request for an expedited hearing - is more a matter of weeks than months.

Still, the St. Louis Rams announced via Twitter they're pushing back the deadline for renewing season tickets to June 1 to give fans "flexibility given the current labor uncertainty." Other teams have previously adjusted prices and renewal plans to account for the lockout.

Basketball

Sacramento Mayor Kevin Johnson called the decision by the owners of the Sacramento Kings to keep the NBA team in the city another year a winning playoff moment and pledged to keep the public informed about future arena plans.

The Kings had been considering a move to Anaheim after several failed efforts to build an arena in Sacramento but decided to give Johnson one more shot. Monday was the team's deadline to seek league permission to relocate.

Hockey

Nick Palmieri scored twice and the United States scored four third-period goals to beat Norway 4-2 and advance to the second round of the ice hockey world championship in Kosice, Slovakia.
