COEUR d'ALENE - After a mercy-rule opener and a tough start in Game 2, the mood in Lake City's dugout was plummeting with Monday evening's temperatures.
But a six-run, seven-hit bottom of the seventh brightened the Timberwolves' day as they stunned visiting Lewiston 8-7 to split a 5A Inland Empire League doubleheader.
Pete Hoffman began the rally with a base hit, then ended it with a bases-loaded, two-run single as Lake City recovered from a 14-0 loss in the opener.
"You usually don't have a deficit like that against Lewiston and find yourself winning," coach Al Bevacqua said. "Hitting is contagious sometimes, and our guys kept finding a way to hit the ball where they weren't. It was pretty exciting, and I was really happy for the boys."
Grant Curtis had a bases-clearing double during the winning rally, and Emmitt Stangel also had an RBI single. Ben Cheevers picked up the victory in relief for Lake City (8-11, 3-8 IEL).
In the opener, Bo Kearns threw a three-hit shutout and Kyle Mai hit a 3-run homer for the Bengals (13-9, 6-6).
The T-Wolves host Coeur d'Alene at 4 p.m. Thursday.
