MOSES LAKE - It must be nice to make a late season push to only see the golf regular season calendar wrap up in one's own backyard.
The Moses Lake Chiefs boys golf team saw to that as they played host to the fifth and final Columbia Basin Big Nine POD on Monday at the Moses Lake Country Club and ended up taking second place with a 319 team score, only seven strokes behind season-long powerhouse Richland.
With this recent surge of strong play, the Chiefs finished in second place of the final league standings.
"Again, we keep having our best team scores in a long time," Moses Lake head coach J.R. Cox said. "Our main team goal was to stay second in the league. Not only did we do that today but we even gave Richland a little scare only losing to them by seven shots. The players battled through wind and rain off and on all day but they stayed positive and focused and our team score of 319 is one of our best in a long time."
Leading the way was Randy McNair who shot a team-low 70 and was the round's medalist with his two-under-par result.
"This was a result of his putting prowess and his great eagle on the par five, 10th hole," Cox said of McNair. "He is really playing great and staying patient on the golf course."
Gabe Porter shot a 79, Tanner Montgomery finished with an 84 and Brenden Cox knocked in a score of 86 to be the fourth and final scorer.
Nick Sutherland also shot an 88 and Kellan Roellich ended his round with a 90.
"Randy, Tanner, Brenden and Nick were all locks for making the district tournament as only the 33 top point leaders get in," coach Cox said. "Kellan has worked really hard the last two league PODS and jumped 10-plus places to be our sixth player to qualify for districts. I was very proud with how all the players represented themselves and our school today."
