RATHDRUM - As it turned out, one game was all the Lakeland Hawks needed to seal their playoff fate.
With runners on first and third and one out, a Moscow batter hit a fly ball to Troy Carr in center field, Carr made the catch and threw back to first base to double up Jake Helbling to give the Hawks a 4-3 win over the Moscow Bears in a 4A Inland Empire League game Thursday.
"Troy threw a rocket from center field," Lakeland coach Jason Bradbury said. "He made an amazing catch and threw back in to Tyler (Burnett), who scooped the ball and got an out."
Moscow's Drew Papineau, who was the tying run at third base, had to return to third to tag up, and he failed to score before the third out was made at first base.
"It was really head's up on Troy's part," Bradbury said. "Burnett has saved us time and time again."
Daniel Whitesitt's sacrifice fly in the fourth inning gave Lakeland (10-11, 3-4 4A IEL) the lead for good.
The teams were scheduled to play a doubleheader, but the second game was called because of rain and lightning with Moscow leading 9-6 in the top of the fifth inning.
With the win, Lakeland clinches the No. 2 seed to the 4A Region 1 tournament and will host Sandpoint on Saturday at noon. The win meant the Hawks could do no worse than tie Sandpoint (6-14, 3-5) with a loss in the nightcap, and Lakeland already held the tiebreaker over the Bulldogs, by playing more games against 5A schools.
Moscow (10-8, 5-2) is the No. 1 seed, and plays host to Saturday's winner on Monday.
