NIC music groups to honor mothers

North Idaho College's musical and choral groups will join forces to present a weekend of music for moms in honor of Mother's Day.
The jazz concert "Swingin' Into Spring" will be at 7:30 p.m. tonight at Boswell Hall Schuler Performing Arts Center.
The NIC Jazz Ensemble will perform the Ray Noble arrangement of the Earle Hagen piece "Harlem Noctrene," which is a ballad performed in honor of longtime band member Jim Barnett, who passed away earlier this spring. The Jazz Ensemble will also feature the bluesy swing tune by well-known jazz composer/writer Bob Florence titled "Wide Open Spaces."
The Jazz Co. jazz choir's portion of the evening will feature the Rodgers and Hammerstein pieces "It Might as Well Be Spring" and "Something Wonderful" as well as the Bob Russell and Duke Ellington song "Don't Get Around Much Anymore."
The traditional "Mother's Day in the Park" concert will begin at 2 p.m. Sunday in the Coeur d'Alene City Park bandshell. In case of inclement weather, the concert will be moved to the Boswell Hall Schuler Performing Arts Center.
The NIC Wind Symphony will perform a number of pieces, including the classic John Williams arrangement of the "Star Spangled Banner," before joining with the NIC Chamber Singers on the John Philip Sousa piece "Battle Hymn of the Republic" as well as Williams' "Hymn to the Fallen" and Roy Ringwald's "Battle Hymn of the Republic."
Both concerts are free and open to the public.
