OTHELLO 4-1
Ellensburg 1-4
OTHELLO - Behind a 4-1 win Wednesday against Ellensburg, the Othello Huskies boys tennis team stands in first place of the Central Washington Athletic Conference (CWAC) heading into the district tournament.
The Huskies swept doubles action as the No. 1 team of Marcus Garza and Wesley Cogswell held on for a 7-5, 6-1 win, the No. 2 duo of Alec Montemayor and Ben Taff held on for a 6-3, 7-5 victory and the No.3 team of Austin Roylance and Gabe Harris rolled, 6-3, 6-2.
"The boys looked great and the big match up was at No, 1 boys doubles," Othello head coach Robert Pruneda said. "They needed to win in order to secure a seeded spot in districts. Ellensburg had one of their boys not go to the match for personal issues. His replacement was a solid player and Marcus and Wesley showed up and got it done."
Garza and Cogswell started slow but then got into a rhythm.
"Those guys have been looking for a match to challenge them mentally and physically," Pruneda said. "They were down in the first set and were able to capitalize on the net and score easy points. Wesley had incredible ground strokes and had multiple winning cross court shots."
Montemayor and Taff also had to grind a win out.
"They have not had a 'struggle set' and when they did they were able to rely on their serves and get the win," Pruneda said. "They didn't panic and just played, which is a hard thing to do in doubles. Many times partners get mad at each other or break down mentally but Alec and Benn did not do that at all."
No. 2 singles player, Andrew Logan, wrapped up with team result with a hard-fought, 4-6, 6-2, 7-6 (5) win.
The Othello girls fell 4-1 to Ellensburg and to 5-3 in the CWAC.
Recording the sole win for the Lady Huskies was the No. 2 doubles team of Amelia Roylance and Yanitta Cantu, who won 6-3, 6-1.
