QUINCY - Four Quincy youth were presented awards as part of the Communities That Care program.

Alejandra Garcia, Cristian Ramon, Jessica Esparza and Manuel Ybarra all received the organization's Youth Recognition Award during a recent city council meeting.

The award is given to people between 12 and 21 years old, who promote a healthy lifestyle, act as a positive role model, volunteer time to the community or school and exhibit personal integrity, according to the organization. All of the nominees need to live in the Quincy Valley.

The presentations started with Jessica Esparza. The Quincy High School senior was selected for demonstrating and fostering her passion for service to others, leadership and teamwork. Esparza was one of the people organizing Youth Action's Draw the Line event, which was aimed at deterring underage alcohol use.

"Jessica is strong, courageous and truly emphasized the 'go-getter' attitude as she balances her academic, extracurricular activities and community volunteer work," Coalition Director Ray Horodowicz said. "Her mom says, 'Jessica is special because she always enjoyed helping others since she was 3 years old.'"

Alejandra Garcia was the next winner. The Running Start student from Quincy High School was selected because of her drug and alcohol-free lifestyle, dedicating her energy to her academics, spiritual activities and volunteer service, according to the organization.

"While Alejandra is hardworking, consistent and focused on her goals, she takes time to be attentive and loving towards all," Horodowicz said. "Dad shares this comment, 'One thing that is special about Alejandra is her good sense of humor. She always keeps you smiling with her positive way of being.'"

The next winner was Cristian Ramon. The Big Bend Community College freshman was selected for her energy, dedication and commitment to the community, according to the organization.

"Cristian has volunteered hundreds of hours to various programs within the community health center," Horodowicz said. "Her work ethic and promotion of a lifestyle free from drugs or alcohol make her an outstanding role model for youth of all ages."

Manny Ybarra was the final recipient of the award. The Quincy High School senior was selected for providing a strong, positive role model for youth in the community, according to the organization.

"Manny has been able to maintain a 4.0 (grade point average), while taking a leadership role in sports activities. He has enjoyed his passion for wrestling and has mentored little ones in the wresting program of our community," Horodowicz said. "Manny has also chosen to be active with spiritual activities and live a healthy alcohol- and drug-free lifestyle."
