PASCO - Finishing the regular season strong is always a blessing for a young team heading into the post season.
The Moses Lake Chiefs secured a key doubleheader sweep at Chiawana on Friday, winning 7-5 and 7-4 in Pasco to finish the season with a 12-8 record overall and 6-6 in the Big 9 to finish fourth in the league.
Those two wins earned Moses Lake the right to host a Loser Out Big 9 district playoff game at Larsen Field on Thursday against fifth-seeded Eisenhower at 4 p.m.
The winner advances to Saturday's semifinals. The two teams split their games this season.
Against Chiawana, the Chiefs scored five runs in the second inning with two outs of game one. Holly Perry singled and stole second, Brianna Hoffman then doubled to bring her teammate home.
Katie Martinez then singled Hoffman home and is moved to third on a Hailee Bishop single.
Bishop stole second base and Cassandra Guerrero singled in Martinez for the third run before Tasha Gentry doubles to the gap scoring Bishop and Guerrero.
"The kids were really aggressive and I love it," Moses Lake head coach Dave Gregory said. "I love it when they get down and dirty scoring those runs with two outs."
VanLaethem pitched a complete game for the win, scattering 12 hits as her defense backed her with no errors.
In the nightcap, the Chiefs had a big sixth inning which made the difference.
Gentry doubled with one out and Alex Jones singled her home. Perry then hit an infield single and Bree Valdez singled as well to load the bases.
Hoffman then doubled home Jones and Perry before Martinez reached base on a Chiawana error. Bishop walks to load the bases and Guerrero singled home Martinez.
Tressa Radach singled to load the sacks again and Gentry comes up again who doubles to bring home another two runs before the rally finally ended.
Sadie Smigaj pitched for the second game win while Guerrero finished 4-for-4.
"I was really pleased with the whole effort," Gregory said. "They were aggressive on the bases and with our speed we have to go for it."
