CHELAN - Already enjoying a solid first season back in Class 2B soccer, the Warden Cougars decided to make the most of their stay.

Playing in the first round of the district playoffs, the Cougars traveled to Chelan and despite taking on a top seed the Cougars, came away with a 2-1 win following a 4-3 edge in the penalty kick shootout.

The win gives Warden (8-4) its first ever state tournament berth as they advance to the district semifinals where they play fellow North Central Washington 2B rivals, Brewster (13-2-1) on Tuesday at 4 p.m.

"I'm very pleased in the way the team is finding the way to win some very tough games," Warden head coach Ed Aguilar said. "Chelan only lost one game during the whole season and a is very quick and well coached team."

Chelan led 1-0 at halftime after a 25th minute goal.

Warden would break through with ten minutes left in regulation when Hector Camacho fed fellow Cougar Ricardo Araujo who drove the ball home to tie the game at 1-1.

"That was Richardo's second goal all season but it is probably the most important he has scored for the team," Aguilar said

The overtime didn't see either team break through so the clubs went to the shootout.

There Chelan missed their first and fourth kicks while the Cougars paraded Jesus Rangel, Carlos Gomez, and Arturo Dominguez up to the spot and all three scored to make it 3-2 with two shots remaining.

Both teams missed their fourth kick and that gave Camacho the chance to secure the win when Chelan scored their third PK.

Camacho's kick was true and the Cougars were through to the state.

"The whole team jumped all over him to celebrate Warden's first trip to state," Aguilar said.

Warden outshot Chelan 20-8.
