Permit for Black Rock mine extended

The Kootenai County commissioners voted unanimously last week to extend the permit on a surface mine used for the construction of Black Rock North.

The conditional use permit for the 32-acre mine is now extended until the subdivision's required completion date of March 1, 2017.

The surface mine, at Rockford Bay Road and Loffs Bay Road, is planned to resume activity when work on the luxury development starts up again.

Material has already been stockpiled at the mine. Black Rock spokespeople have said that the mine's property owners, BRN Development and Lautrec, LLC, believe the excavation and reclamation of the mine are directly related to completing infrastructure improvements for the development.

Due to the struggling real estate market, only four of the planned 325 residential properties at Black Rock North have been platted.

The county commissioners added a new stipulation after deliberations on April 5 at the county Administration Building that any blasting activities at the mine be limited between 9 a.m. and 2 p.m.

Bonsai Bistro to host dinner for homeless

COEUR d'ALENE - Bonsai Bistro will host a dinner and music event to benefit Coeur d'Alene's homeless community.

Bonsai's first "Donation Dinner" is set for 5-9 p.m. Tuesday, May 17, with entertainment by Kathy Colton & The Reluctants. The cost is $50 per person at the door, with proceeds going to Fresh Start Coeur d'Alene. Reservations are recommended.

"We're excited to combine three of our passions - good food, good music and a good cause," said Tamara Dickerson, general manager of Bonsai Bistro.

Fresh Start located at 16th and Sherman Avenue in Coeur d'Alene operates a service for the homeless. Here, people can get something warm to eat and drink, take a shower, do laundry, make calls and emails and access a free medical clinic. Fresh Start, which typically sees 50-75 people per day, is a nonprofit run almost entirely by volunteers, with no federal, county or city funding.

Kathy Colton & The Reluctants is a woman's group known for their strong harmonies and dynamic live performance. The band includes Kathy Colton, Denise Bartlett, Maxine Whiteside and Carla Grant.

"Music has always been an important part of our lives," Colton says. "It's the universal language of the soul and the voice of the heart."

Event reservations are limited, with space limited to 88 guests on the top floor. Bonsai Bistro is still open that evening for other dinner reservations on the lower level. Call (208) 765-4321.
