COEUR d'ALENE - For the Coeur d'Alene Vikings, it might have seemed like a walk in the park on Tuesday to advance to the state 5A tournament, but it wasn't any less painful getting there.

The Vikings took advantage of five hit batters in the first inning - for the game, they were hit six times and walked six times - in a 16-2 victory over the Lewiston Bengals in the 5A Region 1 tournament championship game at Ted Page Field.

"It's exciting stuff for the kids," Coeur d'Alene coach Nick Rook said. "They should be proud of their accomplishments."

Coeur d'Alene (23-1) swept through the 5A Inland Empire League and won both games in the regional tournament to advance to the state tournament next week at Hawks Stadium in Boise.

Coeur d'Alene opens against the No. 5 seed from District 3 on Thursday at 6:15 p.m. PDT.

"It's down to a one-game season now," Rook said. "We're going to have to play three perfect games to get where we want to be. We're going to concentrate on Thursday and worry about Friday when it comes."

Lewiston took the early advantage on a two-run single by Ryan Humphrey, but quickly gave the lead back in the bottom of the first inning with three straight walks by Bengals starter Kyler Brooks.

With the bases loaded, Coeur d'Alene got on the board on a wild pitch to score Matt Lambert. Danny Lockhert gave the Vikings the lead for good on the next pitch with a two-run single.

Chad Nyquist also had an RBI single and eventually came around to score as Brooks hit the next four hitters to give the Vikings a 7-2 lead after the first inning.

"We did a good job of taking advantage of the situation," Rook said. "We were able to maximize on our chances. Tom (Grunenfelder) runs a quality program and their pitchers just had an off day."

"You can't come out and give a good team seven runs without swinging the bats," Lewiston coach Tom Grunenfelder said. "It's a lot easier to play up seven than down seven. If they had any jitters today — it didn’t help being down after the first inning. Hats off to Cd’A, they beat us five times this year. We’ll have to go out and play hard on Thursday if we want to get to the state tournament.”

Lewiston (14-10) will host Lake City on Thursday for the second berth to state. Lake City eliminated Post Falls 1-0.

Nyquist finished 4 for 4 with four RBIs for Coeur d’Alene, which turned double plays in the third and fourth inning to end scoring chances for Lewiston.

“It feels great right now,” said Nyquist of the regional title, the Vikings’ first since 2001. “It’s awesome because I’ve been on a tear at the plate the last couple of weeks. I was down earlier in the year, but it feels good to be back at state for a third year in a row.”

Lockhert, who moved to the area in the fall from Missouri, said that the team has been a help to him on and off the field.

“It’s been fun this year,” Lockhert said. “Being on the baseball team has helped me out a lot socially making new friends. They’ve meant the world to me.”

“Danny has been a huge asset for us this season,” Rook said. “He’s had a lot of extremely important at-bats for us this season.”

Senior Jake Pereira struck out five and walked three for Coeur d’Alene.

Derek Donoian had three hits for Lakeland (12-11), which awaits the winner of today’s loser-out game between Sandpoint (6-15) at Moscow (10-9).

“I’ve got to give credit to Reece (Dietrich) and Daniel (Whitesitt),” Lakeland coach Jason Bradbury said. “Daniel pitched a great game until the sixth and Reece came in and shut them down.”

Cody Vandever came on in the eighth to close the game for Lakeland.

“Cody threw 112 pitches yesterday (Monday) and I asked him if he could give me 20 pitches today,” Bradbury said. “You could see the spirits of our infield lift when he took the mound and he shut them down by getting a strikeout and grounder to third to end the game. It was huge for us.”

If Moscow wins, Lakeland travels to Moscow for the championship game on Thursday.
