NIC to open Region 18 tourney today

North Idaho College (33-24) will enter the start of the Region 18 softball tournament as the No. 4 seed and will face Snow College (20-26) in the opening game today at 11:30 a.m. in Salt Lake City.

Southern Nevada (36-26) will face Western Nevada in the other opening round game.

Tournament host Salt Lake (49-7) and Southern Idaho (41-17) received first-round byes.

Legel, Failor help

team win tourney

YAKIMA, Wash. — Helped by Erin Legel, a junior from Coeur d’Alene High, and Dani Failor, a sophomore at Post Falls, the Spokane Stars Red AAU girls basketball team won the high school girls division at the Best in the West tournament last weekend.

The Stars defeated Walker’s Home Team (Seattle) 56-44, Lady Style Elite (63-35), Hoop Dreams (Boise) 49-37, Northwest Blazers (Spokane) 53-44 in the semifinals and, in the finals, the Flight Blue (Puget Sound) 54-40.

Legel scored 22 points against Walker’s, 21 vs. Lady Style Elite, 12 vs. Hoop Dreams, 26 vs. the Northwest Blazers and 20 vs. Flight Blue.

Failor scored 15 points against Walker’s, 14 vs. Lady Style Elite, 14 vs. Hoop Dreams, 14 vs. the Northwest Blazers and 15 vs. Flight Blue.

Scramble to honor

Curtis on May 21

The Kootenai County Vandal Boosters will hold their Vandal Scramble golf tournament on Saturday, May 21 starting at 1 p.m. at Hayden Lake Country Club.

Special guests include athletic director Rob Spear and numerous Vandals coaches. They will also honor Bob Curtis, the original voice of the Vandals. Proceeds from the event will go toward scholarships for student-athletes at the University of Idaho.

Player registration is $175 and additional dinners are $40.

Spokane man wins

AFL logo contest

TULSA, Okla. — When the Arena Football League announced fans would be given the chance to design the official logo for ArenaBowl XXIV, Myk Crawford of Spokane went to work.

The league announced the contest on April 29 and fans had just over a week to submit entries. Of more than 50 designs, Crawford’s design was voted the winning submission by fans at www.arenafootball.com. He has been a Spokane Shock season ticket holder since their inaugural season.

For winning, Crawford will receive two tickets to ArenaBowl XXIV, an official game football with the logo engraved and entry to the AFL Award Banquet prior to the championship game.

ArenaBowl XXIV is set for Friday, Aug. 12 at 5 p.m.

LACROSSE

MOSCOW — Cory Mortensen had three goals and two assists as Coeur d’Alene defeated Logos 10-4 in a North Idaho Lacrosse match Wednesday.

John Moore had 10 saves for Coeur d’Alene (9-5, 9-2 NILL), which travels to Sandpoint on Friday.

BASEBALL

Moscow 4

Sandpoint 1

MOSCOW — Moscow pitcher Nolan Johnson threw a one-hitter as the top-seeded Bears defeated the Sandpoint Bulldogs 4-1 in a loser-out game in the 4A Region 1 baseball tournament.

Tevin Hamilton allowed four hits in six innings for Sandpoint, which concludes the season 6-16.

Lakeland travels to Moscow today and with a win, the Hawks will clinch the regional title. If Moscow wins, the two will meet again on Friday in Moscow to determine the lone berth from the region for the state 4A tournament, starting next Thursday at Bishop Kelly High in Boise.
