NIC drops opener to Snow

SALT LAKE CITY - Desirae Tinoco hit a three-run home run to give the fourth-seeded North Idaho Cardinals a 6-5 lead in the bottom of the sixth inning, but the fifth-seeded Snow Badgers rallied with four runs in the top of the seventh for a 9-6 win in the opening round of the Region 18 softball tournament Thursday at Salt Lake Community College's Bruin Field.
"We didn't play our best today and you can't do that at this tournament," NIC assistant coach Angie Boardman said.
Snow opened the scoring with a three-run third inning. The Badgers increased the advantage to 5-0 on a two-run single by Mallory Hyland tin the fourth.
NIC (33-25) got on the board in the sixth inning as KaSara Wise singled and scored on a hit by Maddie Edwards. The Cardinals also got RBIs on a bases loaded walk to Blake Meredith and a fielder's choice by Shelby Gonzales.
Jessyca Fulmer doubled to tie the game and Sarah Baysinger singled to give Snow (21-26) the lead for good with nobody out in the seventh.
Also Thursday, Shelby Gonzales was selected to the all-Scenic West Athletic Conferece first team and Tinoco, Meredith and Kristina DeAnda were named to the second team.
NIC will face Southern Idaho in a loser-out game today at 11 a.m. (PDT).
