Charges sought in Kellogg hazing incident

On Friday a document recommending battery charges for three Kellogg High School softball players made its way from the Kootenai County Sheriff's Office to the courthouse.

The girls whose actions are the focus of that document remained at school Friday, 40 miles away from Coeur d'Alene.

Meanwhile, the mother of the alleged victim has received plenty of support for her daughter as the incident receives increased attention.

Kootenai sheriff's spokesman Lt. Stuart Miller said detectives have completed an investigation into the May 3 incident which involved a trio of softball team members disrobing one of their own on the bus ride home from a competition in Potlatch.

"Detectives sent a report with a request for battery charges and possibly hazing," said Miller. "The three held the one girl down and disrobed her - all three are under the age of 18."

At 3:30 p.m. Friday Kootenai County Prosecuting Attorney Barry McHugh said he had not reviewed the detectives' report but expected to pursue the issue sometime Monday.

"I talked to detectives late in the morning today," said McHugh. "I haven't seen anything yet so I have no idea what charges, if any, will be filed."

McHugh said his office has a "great wealth of experience" and is ready to deal with the incident.

Approximately 600 miles to the east in South Dakota the victim's mother, Heidi Hershly, stared at an email inbox flooded with messages of support - many intimating her daughter's terrible experience was not an isolated incident.

"I've had over 100 emails from people I don't even know," said Hershly. "I'm talking about other mothers that have moved their kids out of the school because they were being bullied by the same girls ... there's been a reign of terror with these three girls."

Over the phone she read selected excerpts from a few of the messages.

"This one says 'I'm in your corner 100 percent. Those girls have been getting away with their bulling crap for years,' " read Hershly.

"'Please push the charges ...'"

"'Everyone always just tries to sweep it under the carpet ...'"

"'They're bullies and so are their parents ...'"

"'This has to stop.'"

She said the school never once attempted to contact her and it was only through a random Facebook message that she learned about the incident. The email asked if the victim was her daughter after briefly referring to the incident. Immediately Hershly was floored.

"I was furious, outraged, appalled, angry - there just aren't enough words to describe it," said Hershly. "She was naked on the bus with only a blanket."

Hershley said she did not think the alleged perpetrators' intentions were malicious at first but, without adequate supervision or an authority figure to halt escalation, things went too far.

"They crossed the line - tearing her underwear off her body?" said the victim's mother. "I don't want to ruin these girls' lives - I want them to have bright futures but they need to be taught a lesson ... I think charges should be filed."

She placed much of the blame on the school district and its apparent lack of proper supervision. Pointing to the hundreds who came out of the woodwork to claim knowledge of a perpetual bullying problem at the school Hershly said its time for the school to not only enact, but to also enforce a "zero tolerance policy" with regard to bullying.

"This isn't just about punishing these girls," said angered mother. "It's about Kellogg setting a precedent saying we won't tolerate it anymore."

Kellogg softball coach Alan Williams, who was on the bus at the time of the incident, has been placed on paid administrative leave.

"I'm not on the field coaching but I'm still the coach," said Williams.

Kellogg Athletic Director Dick Schreiber declined to comment and Kellogg Public Schools Superintendent Sandra Pommerening took Friday off.

According to Hershly, a school board hearing with regard to the incident has been set for Wednesday night.
