Post Falls doubles up on regional titles

5A REGION 1

LEWISTON - The Post Falls boys doubles team of Michael Tucker and Ben Payton, and the Trojan mixed doubles squad of Brittany Engle and Jordan Hernandez won regional titles to advance to the state 5A tournament starting Friday in Boise.

The top three in each division advanced.

"It took them a while to get going today," said Post Falls coach Angela Blair of Tucker and Payton. "One they learned to move together, they started to play well. Once they figured that out, they were dominating."

Luke Ness and Matt Finney qualified for Lake City in boys singles.

"The kids fought hard all weekend," Lake City boys coach Tim Scott said. "It was a long, hot day yesterday. My boys just came up a little short, but they'll come back and get ready for state."

The girls doubles team of Sonja Jacobson and Cassidy Hand, and Sloane Booterbaugh and Kyle Coffey in mixed doubles advanced for Coeur d'Alene.

Lewiston won the regional title. Lake City was second, Post Falls third, Coeur d'Alene fourth.

State is Friday and Saturday at the Boise Racquet & Swim Club in Boise.

Top 3 to state. Winners of the championship match, and both participants in the second-place match advance to state.

Sandpoint wins, sends record 12

to state

COEUR d'ALENE - Sandpoint won the team title and qualified a school-record 12 players to state from the 4A Region 1 tennis tournament, which concluded Saturday.

Sandpoint's Drew and Micah Buckmiller, the No. 1 seed in boys doubles, came back from a loss in the main draw finals to defeat Moscow in the back-draw to gain a spot at state.

"They played at their highest level of the year today and never ceased attacking at the net," Sandpoint coach Kent Anderson said. "Both of their serves have become major weapons ... it is really difficult to break them."

Courtney Windju and Megan Rockwell worked their way through the back-draw to defeat Kalyn Lewis and Stina Tommila of Moscow to advance to state in girls doubles.

"Megan and Courtney were barely on the radar when the season opened," Anderson said. "Their daily improvement has been amazing. They have both developed strong groundstrokes and have a natural attacking style."

Jacob Carrothers and Nicolette Jessen earned a spot at state in girls doubles by defeating Moscow in the finals of the back draw. After losing to them in the main draw, they came back and won in straight sets.

Winzer helps Charter win

district title

MOSCOW - Rebecca Winzer of Coeur d'Alene Charter defeated teammate Mindy Grantham 4-6, 6-1, 7-6 in the championship match in girls singles as the Panthers went on to claim the 3A District 1-2 championship at the University of Idaho.

Mitch Ketron and Jay Brewer finished second and third in boys singles for Coeur d'Alene Charter.

"These kids worked really hard this spring," Coeur d'Alene Charter coach Eileen Johnson said. "We didn't get to play a lot early in the season because of the weather, but they all gave 110 percent and it paid off today."

Claire McMahon and Brocklynn Thornton won the girls doubles and Stillman Berkley and Nate Nesbitt of Clark Fork the boys doubles to advance to state, scheduled for Friday and Saturday at Vallivue High in Caldwell.
