Football

Zach Maynard's decision to transfer to California appears to have been the right move after all.

Maynard was picked as Cal's starting quarterback to open the 2011 season, emerging as the clear front-runner from one of the deepest and most wide-open spring competitions in coach Jeff Tedford's tenure.

Maynard, a dual-threat quarterback who led led Buffalo to its first bowl game appearance in 2009, sat out all of last year and had no guarantee of winning Cal's starting job once he transferred. He was among six quarterbacks in the spring competition.

Basketball

Former Michigan basketball star Jalen Rose said Grant Hill has agreed to help support the new charter school in Detroit bearing Rose's name.

The Jalen Rose Leadership Academy is expected to open in September.

Soccer

American midfielder Lindsay Tarpley will miss the Women's World Cup after tearing her right anterior cruciate ligament.

Tarpley was hurt with 15 minutes left in Saturday's 2-0 exhibition win over Japan. An MRI on Saturday night confirmed the tear. She will be sidelined six to eight months.

Blue Jays 11, Minnesota 3: At Minneapolis, Jose Bautista hit three homers for the first time in his career to help Toronto over Minnesota and a sweep of their three-game series.

Rangers 5, Angels 4: Chris Davis homered and later drove in the tiebreaking run in the eighth and Texas beat Los Angeles in Arlington, Texas.

White Sox 4, Athletics 3: Alexei Ramirez had three hits, including a home run off previously unbeaten Trevor Cahill, and visiting Chicago topped Oakland.

Orioles 9, Rays 3: At St. Petersburg, Fla., J.J. Hardy hit a grand slam, Nick Markakis added a solo shot and Baltimore beat Florida.

Red Sox 7, Yankees 5: Kevin Youkilis hit a tying three-run homer, David Ortiz had a go-ahead drive and visiting Boston completed a sweep of reeling New York.

Kansas City at Detroit: ppd., rain: The game between the Royals and Tigers was postponed by rain. No makeup date has been announced.

Brewers 9, Pirates 6: Ryan Braun homered, tripled and drove in four runs, leading host Milwaukee over Pittsburgh.

Braves 3, Phillies 2: Dan Uggla hit a tiebreaking home run in the eighth inning and host Atlanta edged Phildelphia.

Mets 7, Astros 4: Justin Turner homered and drove in a career-high five runs to lead New York at Houston.

Reds 9, Cadinals 7: Brandon Phillips hit a bases-loaded double in the seventh to help host Cincinnati beat St. Louis.

Diamondbacks 4, Dodgers 1: Xavier Nady and Ryan Roberts hit homers to help visiting Arizona over Los Angeles.

Padres 8, Rockies 2: At Denver, Mat Latos snapped a 10-game losing streak in San Diego's win over Colorado.

Nationals 8, Marlins 4: Jason Marquis pitched into the seventh to win his fifth game and led host Washington over Florida.

San Francisco at Chicago Cubs, ppd., rain: The series finale between the Cubs and Giants was postponed by rain. No makeup date was announced.

Hockey

Roman Cervenka scored a hat trick to lead the Czech Republic to a 7-4 victory over Russia and the bronze medal at the ice hockey world championship in Bratislava, Slovakia.

Tennis

Novak Djokovic extended his recent mastery over top-ranked Rafael Nadal with a 6-4, 6-4 win in the Italian Open final in Rome that stretched the Serb's unbeaten start this year to 37 matches.

Auto racing

Antron Brown raced to his second Top Fuel victory of the year, beating teammate Tony Schumacher in the NHRA Southern Nationals at Atlanta Dragway in Commerce, Ga.

Jack Beckman (Funny Car), Jason Line (Pro Stock) and LE Tonglet (Pro Stock Motorcycle) also won their categories.
