Dodge leads after first day
Coeur d'Alene Press | UPDATED 13 years, 8 months AGO
Post Falls High junior Maddie Dodge shot a 5-over-par 77 on Monday to take the individual lead after the first round of the state 5A girls golf tournament at Shadow Valley Golf Course in Boise.
"She had a great round today in the snow and the rain," Post Falls coach Matt Barclay said. "She chipped in for birdie on the final hole to cap a great day."
Dodge was Post Falls' lone representative to state.
Defending champion Lewiston shot a 366 and leads by four strokes after the first day. Coeur d'Alene shot 435 and is in seventh place out of eight teams.
In the state 5A boys tournament, also at Shadow Valley, Coeur d'Alene shot a 330 and is in fourth place out of eight teams after the first round. Defending champion Eagle leads with a 310, followed by Boise (321) and Highland (324).
Lake City's Kevin Porto (76) is tied for third, and teammate Spencer Skipper (80) is tied for ninth.
Hunter Kraft led Coeur d'Alene with an 80, and is tied for ninth in the medalist hunt.
"It's rough conditions here," Coeur d'Alene coach Bryan Duncan said. "They had winter kill and their greens are basically unplayable. It's a joke ... we'd be better off putting on asphalt."
Also, Duncan said snow on Monday morning delayed the start of play. He said conditions were such that golfers had the option of one-clublength relief not only in the fairway, but on the green - "which I've never seen in my life," he said.
"All you're looking for out there is the clown's mouth," Duncan added. "I told the kids, take your score and subtract seven or eight strokes for the greens, and that's what you would shoot on a normal course. Shadow Valley is a great track for state, but the greens are dead."
Michael Porter and John Duffin shot 82 for Coeur d'Alene.
"We were mediocre to poor at best," Duncan said. "But we didn't shoot ourselves out of it."
The tournaments conclude today. The top four teams earn trophies, and the top 10 individuals receive medals.
