Late season state run ends for Moses Lake

SPOKANE - A season which began with promise then got rocked by sadness ended with hope even if a near miss brought dreams to an end for the Moses Lake Chiefs baseball team.
Down to their last out the Ferris Saxons' found a way to crush the Moses Lake dream of making the Class 4A state tournament as Ben Goodwin singled home the winning run for the hosts in a 7-6 win over the Chiefs in a regional tournament loser out game.
Moses Lake (10-17) was one out from a state tournament appearance in a season where they dealt with the death of head coach Ed McNamara and a subsequent seven-game losing streak before making their final, gallant push to wrap their 2011 season in bright memory.
"This is such a large group of seniors and they helped to leave a legacy just they way that coach Mac had talked to them about since they were freshman," Moses Lake interim head coach Quintz Whitaker said. "I am just so proud to have had the honor of coaching them this season. I know some of them will continue playing ball and have success with that, but I believe all of them will be young men that this community and program can be proud of."
Moses Lake jumped out to a 4-0 lead in the top of the second inning when Matt Noyola got on base after a Ferris (19-3) error and Gunner Raymond and Nick Dodds hit back-to-back singles to load the bases. Nate Steffler then hit a two-run double and Bryton Redal's sacrifice fly brought in Dodds for a 3-0 Chiefs' lead.
On one out later, Cameron Alvarado singled in Steffler to wrap up their scoring in the frame.
"It was great to jump out to an early lead, Nate picked up a big hit to help us get the ball rolling," Whitaker said.
Ferris answered with two runs in their half of the second, one more in the third inning, and two runs in the bottom of the fourth to jump out to a 5-4 lead against Moses Lake starter Nick Laszlo.
"Laz battled for us but just didn't have his good stuff today," Whitaker said. "He did his job by keeping us in the ball game."
Moses Lake regained the momentum in the top of the fifth when Alvarado started up things with a walk and would come home on Devin Juarez's triple.
Two batters later Noyola's sacrifice fly brought in Juarez for a 6-5 Moses Lake lead.
"Once again we showed the toughness and courage that has been the mark of this team," Whitaker said.
Ferris tied things at 6-6 to end the fifth inning and eventually would win it with Goodwin's heroics.
"We had some opportunities," Whitaker said. "You always want to end the season winning the last one. I am just so proud of all these boys to think our season could have easily have ended two weeks ago but they wouldn't let that happen. It's all about them and their resiliency. We won same pretty clutch games but sometimes you just come up a little short on the scoreboard."
The Chiefs may have fallen short on the scoreboard, but in terms of heart, especially when speaking of the Chiefs' seniors, they score the maximum.
"I wish them all the best," Whitaker said. "They have again helped to set a foundation that we can build upon as coaches and for that I am thankful to them."
