YAKIMA - For once 13 was quite a nice number on Friday the 13th.
The Moses Lake Chiefs boys and girls track teams combined to get 13 more than just lucky athletes through to the GSL/Big 9 regionals at Spokane Community College this upcoming weekend after their strong performances on Friday at Zaepfel Stadium in Yakima.
Both teams finished last in team standings but that didn't stop four boys and nine girls from punching their ticket to the track season's penultimate weekend.
Keeping the campaigns alive for the boys were Justyn Simmons (long jump, 19'11", third place), Brandon Bradley (shot put, 44'11", sixth place), Cameron Law (pole vault, 12', sixth place), and Cesar Sanabia (300-meter hurdles, seventh place, 42.82).
Spearheading the girls' efforts was the 4x100-relay team of Kayla Grigg, Caylah Lunning, Keiley Garcia, and Magie Munoz who ended up third with a time of 50.9 that broke a 24-year school record that stood at 51.2.
Sadie Nielsen made it through to regionals in both the discus (third, 120') and shot put (sixth place, 32'11").
Taylor Ballard entered the shot put competition in 12th place but her throw of 33'3.75" was good enough for fourth place and a chance to move on.
Freshman Caylah Lunning continued her late surge in the long jump as she won the competition with a 16'8.75 leap and she will be joined in Spokane by teammate Kimberly Bakker who took fourth place with a 16'3" finish.
High jumper Selina Koon, another of the team's touted freshman, ended up in sixth (4'10") and advances to regionals.
Finally, London Cleverly is headed to regionals with a 200-meter time of 27.38.
"I am really excited for the girls we are taking to regionals," Moses Lake girls head coach Nicki Weiland said. "It's also nice that we broke a school record too."
