Clerk reports election errors

Before the polls closed Tuesday, the Kootenai County Clerk announced that some errors were made during the election.
At precinct 40, Dalton Gardens City Hall, poll workers gave two voters the wrong ballots for their addresses, according to a press release from County Clerk Cliff Hayes' office.
Both voters completed and deposited their erroneous ballots before the mistake was discovered.
Poll workers then gave the individuals the correct ballots, which they also filled out and cast.
Deputy Clerk Pat Raffee said there was no way to remove the wrong ballots.
"We wouldn't know whose ballot to discard," she said.
Both the ballots included seats for Lakes Highway District and School Trustee Zone 2, Raffee said.
Repeating the election would only be warranted by an extremely close election, she added.
The error was due to a poll worker's failure to check the poll book to issue the correct ballot, the press release stated, a detail stressed in poll workers' training.
Another issue came up at precinct 28 at Prairie View Elementary School in Post Falls, where no regular voter ballots for School Trustee Zone 2 were ordered from the printer.
The mistake was caught early in the morning by a voting teacher, and absentee ballots were provided within half an hour.
Hayes was not sure how the printing oversight occurred.
