NIC men 21st after first day

North Idaho College sophomore Kris Brett carded a four-over par 76 as the Cardinals finished the opening round of the NJCAA men's tournament in 21st place at the Odessa (Texas) Country Club Links Course on Tuesday.

"We got out to a great start after six holes," NIC coach Derrick Thompson said. "Then we hit a lull in the middle of the round after the wind picked up on the toughest part of the course. We finished pretty decently, but we definitely didn't play our best round."

The course also hasn't seen any measurable rain since last July, according to Thompson.

"It was playing really, really dry," Thompson added. "The course was playing fast and between the 20 to 30 mile per hour wind gusts, it made the yardage seem much longer."

McLennan and Central Alabama are tied for the lead with a 286. NIC shot 316.

"Most of the other teams are at 300 or above," Thompson said. "We're in 21st, but only by a handful of shots. We still haven't peaked yet. I think everyone on the team is motivated to play well tomorrow."

NIC slips to 12th

North Idaho College shot a second-day 389 to slip into 12th place at the NJCAA women's golf tournament at LPGA International Golf Club in Daytona Beach, Fla.

"Luckily for us, nobody really ran away with it today," NIC assistant coach Randy Boswell said. "We were getting off the tee a lot better today, but the wind grabbed the ball a little bit."

Freshman Rachel Westby shot a second-round 94 and sophomore Emily Thorud a 95 to lead NIC.

"We lost some strokes on the water hazards also," Boswell said. "We're not down and out yet and we hope the best golf is ahead of us."
