MATTAWA - Public Works employee Jack Fox updated the Mattawa City Council on the possibility of a skate park at the most recent meeting of the council on May 5.

According to City Clerk Diane Hanson, the update was brief, mostly about actions Fox is taking to study the issue. So far, consideration is being given to a small park, perhaps in the $25,000 cost range, Hanson said.

In other action, new City Clerk Robin Newcomb was introduced to the council. She started May 1 and will be a full-time city clerk. Hanson, who was hired as a temp, served half-time.

Police Chief Steve Jensen reported he's in the process of hiring two new officers. One is for a position that increases the force by one. The other replaces Joe Chiprez, who has taken a position with the Sunnyside Police Department.

Hanson said Jensen is close to recommending one of the candidates to the council.
