Maddie Dodge had a rough start and a rough finish, but held it together the rest of the round to finish second at the state 5A girls golf tournament at Shadow Valley Golf Course in Boise, which concluded Tuesday.

Dodge, who led by four shots after shooting a 5-over-par 77 on Monday, started Tuesday's round off with a triple bogey, double bogey and bogey, and finished with a bogey, double bogey and bogey for an 82.

She finished at 159, four shots behind Tyler Barker of Vallivue, who shot 83-72-155. Dodge's runner-up finish at state is the highest in school history by a Post Falls girl.

"I was really happy that I still finished up there," said Dodge, a junior. "I started off 6-over after three, so I had to bring it back big-time. I just told myself not to give up and to keep going, that it can't get any worse than it is now."

Coeur d'Alene's boys brought home a trophy by finishing fourth. Kevin Porto of Lake City medaled by finishing ninth with a 76-83-159.

Dodge, who placed ninth at state two years ago as a freshman, played even-par golf on the middle 12 holes, with a birdie and a bogey.

"She could have caved after those first three holes, but she put a string of pars together to keep her in the hunt," Post Falls girls coach Matt Barkley said. "I was pretty proud of her."

Dodge's sister, Genna, finished fifth at state two years ago and tied for fourth in 2008.

Mike Porter shot 161 and finished 11th for Coeur d’Alene.

“We shot quite a bit better today,” Coeur d’Alene coach Bryan Duncan said. “The conditions improved a bit from yesterday and we were able to make a run at third.”

Eagle repeated as boys team champs.

“The kids were battling all day today,” Duncan said. “Brennan (Stillinger), our lone senior, got back to a 79. I was proud of the way they competed considering the conditions.”

Coeur d’Alene’s girls finished seventh, shooting 425 after shooting 435 on Monday. Capital won the state title, finishing five strokes ahead of defending champion Lewiston.

“Our play was night and day from yesterday,” Coeur d’Alene co-girls coach Melody Melton said. “It was a good end to the season and we’re looking forward to next season.”
