They've done it in football and wrestling.
Now the Coeur d'Alene Vikings are setting their sights on a state 5A championship on the baseball diamond starting Thursday at Hawks Memorial Stadium in Boise.
5A: Coeur d'Alene (23-1) enters the state tournament with wins in their previous 16 games, including a 16-2 win over Lewiston in the Region 1 championship game at Ted Page Field on May 10.
"It's down to a one-game season now," Coeur d'Alene coach Nick Rook said. "We've got to play three perfect games from here on out."
Coeur d'Alene opens the tournament against Mountain View (17-9) at 6:15 PDT.
“We’ll spend our time in practice concentrating on Thursday night,” Rook said. “We’ll worry about Friday when we get there.”
The Vikings are hitting .380 as a team, led by senior center fielder Matt Lambert with a .474 average. Senior Drew Turbin leads the team with five home runs and 36 RBIs.
Jake Pereira is 10-0 with a 0.90 ERA, with 37 strikeouts in 45 innings. Colin Comack is 2-0 with a 3.00 ERA in 22 2/3 innings. Mikey Schmidt is 4-1 with a 4.20 ERA in 28 innings. The Vikings have a team ERA of 2.40.
Coeur d’Alene finished tied for third last year after rain canceled its game with Rocky Mountain.
Lewiston (15-10), which is the second seed from Region 1, opens with Rocky Mountain (19-6), the only team to beat the Vikings this season.
Coeur d’Alene will play either Centennial (14-12) or Capital (20-5) on Friday. The Vikings beat Centennial earlier this season.
Timberline of Boise, the defending state champion and the 5A Southern Idaho Conference regular-season champion, stumbled at districts and failed to qualify for state.
4A: Many of the last names on the jerseys may be the same as in ’08 — but the first names are different for the Lakeland Hawks, who open state Thursday vs. Skyview of Nampa at 3 p.m. at Bishop Kelly High in Boise.
Lakeland (13-12) sends six brothers of players that went 2-1 and placed fourth in the school’s first state 4A appearance in 2008.
“These kids aren’t afraid to hit any kind of pitching,” Lakeland coach Jason Bradbury said. “That team in ’08 had a tough time hitting the curve ball. It wasn’t that we couldn’t, but when these current kids get in the box, they’re more patient and can always make an adjustment.”
Troy (older brother Lance) Carr, Gaige (Chance) Long, Derek (Daniel) Donoian, Cody (Kyle) Vandever, Will (Jesse) Marks and Tyler (Ryan) Burnett will try to build on their brothers’ performance in the ’08 tournament.
Joe and older cousin C.J. Schwalbach also comprised a unique group of Lakeland players.
“The camaraderie that group had in ’08 was great,” Bradbury said. “They’d stay after practice and play baseball golf. This group, they’re always around the cage. This group wants it and works hard on the field.”
The Hawks went 0-2 at state last year.
“I’m really excited,” Bradbury said. “We’ve got everyone back from last year’s team outside of two seniors. It was a new experience for them last year. It was brand new and we played like it last year.”
Lakeland allowed five first-inning runs in the ’10 tournament opener to Minico and lost 10-1.
“We were a little wide-eyed to see that caliber of play at state last year,” Bradbury said. “We’re going down there with some confidence and hoping to bring back some hardware. We’ve faced good pitching all year and are not afraid to face good pitching. We’re really excited to get down there and see what we can do.”
3A: District 1 champion Bonners Ferry (10-13) opens with Buhl (10-12) at noon PDT on Thursday at Treasure Valley Community College in Ontario, Ore.
Priest River (12-10), the district runner-up, faces Fruitland in the final opening round game at 6.
