Father, son theft suspects caught

POST FALLS - A father and his son suspected of burglarizing area Walmarts multiple times were arrested on Tuesday night after allegedly attempting another theft and leading police on a pursuit into Washington.
Michael Dyczok Sr., 65, and Michael Dyczok Jr., 35, both transients from the Spokane area, were booked into Spokane County Jail for charges of eluding police and destruction of stolen property after the chase ended in a muddy field in the Liberty Lake area.
Both are expected to be extradited back to Kootenai County as the alleged burglary occurred at the Walmart near Cabela's. In Idaho, the two will face felony burglary and eluding charges.
Police said their method for stealing has been filling large plastic bins in the store with high-priced items such as laptop computers during the day, then returning at night, stuffing the business alarm with wet cottonballs to silence the sound and lugging the bins out a side fire door to a getaway vehicle.
"This was a classic example of a business working with police and agencies working together," Post Falls Capt. Pat Knight said. "It was nice to catch them, and it all ended peacefully."
Knight said Walmart security on Tuesday afternoon noticed the suspects and their vehicle on surveillance from previous alleged burglaries.
Security also witnessed the bins being filled with items.
The bins were left as is, setting up a sting operation for that night. The company contacted police, who waited in the parking lot in unmarked cars.
The suspects returned about 9:45 p.m., looped around the parking lot to look for police and, when inside, placed two bins in shopping carts along with several other items.
After silencing the alarm, the father exited the fire door in the garden section with merchandise while the son pulled up with a vehicle.
When approached by security, the two sped off with three computers and batteries valued around $1,700. While police chased the two into Washington, one of the computers was allegedly thrown from the vehicle and recovered.
The chase, which involved the Post Falls and Liberty Lake police departments and the Kootenai and Spokane County sheriff's departments, reached speeds of 70 mph in a 45 mph zone.
Knight said the pursuit stalled in a field when a train was in a railroad crossing near Liberty Lake. No one was injured.
"They admitted to burglaries in Airway Heights, north Spokane and Post Falls in the past," Knight said. "They just hit the same Post Falls store two weeks ago and used the garden fire route as their escape route."
The son, who had a suspended license from California, said he was stealing items to make money.
