Charlo sweep both boys and girls district team titles
POLSON - At the 14-C District track meet last Thursday, it was all Lake County, as area teams dominated the competition with a large breadth of excellent performances.
Both the Charlo boys' and girls' track teams won the team district championships by large margins. The Lady Vikings took first with 247 points while the Vikings notched 277 for the boys' district championship.
Charlo's numbers, combined with their talented kids' willingness to be in multiple events, put both track teams in an excellent spot for districts.
The Arlee girls took second place behind Charlo with 135 points while the boys, who were without speedy sprinter Zack Carver due to a hamstring injury, took fourth with 64 points.
The spotlight continued to shine on Vikings' hurdler Stephen Delaney, who won district championships in three different events. In the 300-meter hurdles, Delaney had his best time of the season (39.95) and he also won the 100-meter hurdles (16.01) along with the 400-meter dash (52.02).
"He's put himself in a position to be one of the better hurdlers in the state," Charlo head track and field coach Brett Thompson said, adding that hurdles coach Jared Miller has worked well with Delaney this season.
The Vikings' dominance was staggering as they had firstplace finishes in 12 different events. Four different athletes took first in multiple events. Austin Bauer swept both the 100 (11.59) and 200-meter (24.07) dashes and also placed first in the long jump (19-9). Chance Rosenbaum won the 800 (2:08.62) and the pole vault (12-6). Michael Smith swept the long-distance races, placing first in the 1,600 (4:53.07) and 3,200 (10:35.13).
The Charlo boys also swept both relays. The Arlee boys, who without sprints-favorite Carver, lost a good chunk of points from their team total but still saw several good performances. Sam Nelson repeated as district javelin champion (143-2.5) and took fourth in the triple jump (36-2.5).
Donovan McDonald took second in the 1,600 (5:07.87) and will bring the third-fasted time in that event to divisionals.
Brady Potts took second in the shot put (42-10), while Clayton Trimble took fourth (37-5) and Nelson Big Sam took fifth (36-6.5). Potts also took third in the discus (121-
3.5).
The Charlo girls scored first in 11 events, including sweeps of the relays as well. There were three different athletes that placed first in events for the Lady Vikings. Deondra Brown took first in the 100 (13.72) and 200 (28.72) dashes. Aspen Runkel took first in the 400 (1:01.64) while breaking a 23-year old school record, the 100-meter hurdles (17.11) and 300 hurdles (49.34).
Dawn Blevins won the 800 (2:39.0) and the 1,600 (5:59.0). Another first-place finisher for Charlo was Jordan Ludeman, who placed first in the pole vault (7-6). The Arlee girls were led by Whitney Malatare who took first in the in the long jump (14-10.5) and the triple jump (31-9) with her career-best marks in those events, and tying for first in the high jump with teammate Becca Nelson (4-6).
"The girls did pretty good," Arlee head track and field coach Russ Baker said. "They had one of their best meets of the year."
Malatare also shaved a second off of her 100 (13.86) and 200 (28.87) times to place second in both those events.
"She's just a competitor," Baker said.
Nelson had her career-best performances in the discus (97-8) and javelin (112-7), placing first in both those events. She also placed third in the shot put (28-4).
Rachelle Meidinger placed first in the shot put (33-1) and has the furthest throw going into divisionals. Divisionals will be held on Friday and Saturday at Missoula Big Sky, with the top five going on to state.
"A lot of things will be measured this weekend at divisionals," Thompson said.
Thompson added that the divisional meet will have trials on Friday before the finals on Saturday, and that will be a change from the normal track schedule.
"Some of those kids aren't used to doing back-to-back meets so it will be different," Thompson said.
However, Charlo certainly had a good number of seniors that have the experience to help the younger kids out. That should also bode well to them as the crowd size consistently grows from districts to divisionals to the state tournament. Baker said that according to their current marks right now, it's looking like Arlee could qualify three boys and three girls for state. However, that obviously depends on how athletes go out and perform.
"For the ones that have a chance it's quite a bit more pressure on them," Baker said. "They've just got to come out ready and do their best."
