Funding for Lyon at halfway point

Wanda Lyon is about halfway there, she said.

Since the Rathdrum woman learned that her daughter Loretta will be participating in this summer's Special Olympics World Games in Athens, Greece, Wanda has raised about $3,000 to fund a trip to watch her daughter compete.

She needs about double that, though, to cover her airfare, hotels and meals, she said.

"I just want to thank everybody who's helped us so far," Wanda said.

Her daughter's hotel and travel will be covered, she said, but she has to pay her own way.

"She leaves June 18, so I have to have it at least by then," Wanda said.

The Lyons are asking for the community's support at a golf and spaghetti dinner fundraiser at Links Golf Club in Post Falls on Sunday, May 22.

Folks can play nine holes of golf for $75, with a spaghetti dinner included afterward. Dinner without golf costs $20.

Proceeds will go toward Wanda's travel costs.

Registration for the golf game will start at 1:30 p.m. on Sunday, with the game starting at 3 p.m. Dinner will follow at 5:30.

Folks can pre-register by calling Mike Garcia with Links Golf Club at: 819-0550, or [email protected].

Donations can be made to Wanda's trip at any Wells Fargo branch. Individuals just have to say they want to make a donation for Wanda Lyon.

School board to host community chat

Coeur d'Alene School District trustees will host a community chat from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m. Thursday at Midtown Center, 1505 N. Fifth St.

The purpose is to listen to citizens' thoughts and to share information with no formal agenda. District personnel will spend the first 10-15 minutes discussing the 2011-12 school year budget being drafted, and where the district is considering making cuts.

The general public, parents, teachers, students and all stakeholders are encouraged to attend and discuss whatever is on their mind.

Nominations sought for Brightest Star

Amy Bartoo of Coeur d'Alene went without a paycheck for the first 10 years in creating and nurturing Idaho Drug Free Youth. She wrote grants, asked merchants for donations and held fundraisers to start what is now a statewide program.

Her achievement gained her a 2010 Governor's Brightest Star award, one of 103 individuals, businesses and groups recognized for their outstanding volunteer efforts.

The search is on again for nominees for the 2011 Governor's Brightest Star awards. Nominations must be submitted by Sept. 14. Nominations can be made online athttp://serveidaho.gov/events/governorsbrighteststars.aspx or by calling Serve Idaho at (208) 332-3578 or (800) 588-3334.

Former Mullan resident sentenced

Vicki Jean Fehrs, 56, a former Mullan resident now living in Oregon, was sentenced Tuesday day in U.S. District Court in Coeur d'Alene, for contempt, a misdemeanor, for willfully disobeying a lawful order of a bankruptcy court, U.S. Attorney Wendy J. Olson announced.

Chief U.S. Magistrate Judge Candy W. Dale sentenced Fehrs to five years probation and ordered her to pay $47,927.95 in restitution. Fehrs pleaded guilty to the charge on March 16.

According to court documents, Fehrs, a debtor in a Chapter 7 bankruptcy filed in 2005 in the U.S. Bankruptcy Court, concealed her pre-bankruptcy transfer of a Mullan property to her son.

After receiving a discharge in her bankruptcy case in 2006, Fehrs sold the property and kept the sale proceeds of $47,928, some of which she used to purchase a home in Washington state.
