BOISE - Senior Kyle Garvin's two-run double with one out in the sixth inning gave the Mountain View Mavericks (18-9) the lead for good as they defeated the Coeur d'Alene Vikings 4-3 in the opening round of the state 5A baseball tournament at Hawks Memorial Stadium on Thursday.
"We played well, they played well, but we made a couple mistakes and they capitalized on them," Coeur d'Alene coach Nick Rook said. "The kids can't hang their heads about this. We're disappointed, but it's not like we're done."
Coeur d'Alene (23-2) will face Centennial (14-13) today at noon in a loser-out game.
The Vikings took the lead in the fourth inning as Colin Comack led off with a single and Drew Turbin doubled to put runners on second and third. Danny Lockhert hit a sacrifice fly to score Comack and Kaleb DeHaas singled to score Turbin to tie the game at 2.
Following a double by Levi Pereira, DeHaas scored on a fielder's choice to give Coeur d'Alene a 3-2 lead after the fourth.
Jake Pereira allowed three runs with two strikeouts and a walk for Coeur d'Alene.
