Fishing Magician Report - May 20
Fishing Magician | Hagadone News Network | UPDATED 13 years, 8 months AGO
It never fails. Just about when we can expect the Icicle River to open to spring salmon fishing the rivers blow out, and I mean really blow out. The Wenatchee at Plain reached over 10,000 cubic feet per second (cfs) and the river at Peshastin and Monitor went over 15,000 cfs.
We haven't seen the peak yet. There is still plenty of snow in the mountains and more warm weather on the way. It looks like over 2,000 springers have made the turn up the Wenatchee to the Icicle and I have heard that there are fish rolling and tribal anglers are taking fish at the hatchery.
There should be an announcement about opening the river to fishing any time now. There is a spring salmon season open right now on two sections of the Yakima River. I suggest you go to the WDFW web site and read the details.
This has been a great season the past few years. This river is also running very high, but it is closer to a springer fishery than the lower Columbia, where fishing is excellent by the way. High water isn't an issue at Drano Lake or off the Wind River.

Fishing Magician - New and exciting fisheries
There are a couple of new and very exciting fisheries pending here in Central Washington. Starting as early as August 1st, there could be an opening of fishing for triploid rainbow trout above Brewster. As most anglers know, there was a huge release of triploids from the net pens on Rufus Woods Reservoir, and combined with the spill of water over Chief Joseph Dam a significant number of them are showing up in the Columbia below Bridgeport.
Fishing Magician Report - June 22nd
I've made a couple more trips up to Rufus Woods and have had good fishing both times. Not the red hot fishing I had at the net pens on my first trip, but my fishing buddies and I came home with a cooler so heavy it was hard to lift.
Fishing Magician: Big summer runs
Summer run salmon are pouring up the Columbia River, and although heavy flows continue to hamper angler's efforts, there are both Chinook and sockeye being caught. Many are still making it to the big eddy below Wanapum Dam, their destination, but fishing in the Wenatchee area is very much worth a try.
