Murray launches a winning throw

BOISE - Jonathan Murray elected not to take anything for granted despite being solidly entrenched in the favorite's role in the discus.
The Coeur d'Alene High senior knew that the fierce late-afternoon wind gusts could play havoc with the event.
But once Murray tossed the discus a personal-best 175 feet in Thursday's 5A boys finals, he could breathe a bit easier since it was clear nothing would derail him from winning the state title.
"It's awesome," Murray said after winning his first state crown. "I'm feeling very good about it. It completes my season and puts a nice capper on my career."
Murray was one of six local athletes to be crowned state champions on the first day of the three-day meet at Boise State University's Bronco Stadium. Coeur d'Alene senior Kinsey Gomez (3,200) and junior Cody Curtis (3,200) also won state titles, as well as Post Falls senior Matt Wardell (shot put), Lake City senior Missy Morris (discus) and Lakeland sophomore Jordan Ward (high jump).
Coeur d'Alene is currently in first place in the 5A girls standings with 37 points. Lake City is third at 22. Coeur d'Alene (28) is second in the 5A boys competition and Post Falls (26) is third.
Murray's winning toss in the discus was nearly 11 feet further than second-place Zac Homer (162-3) of Eagle. The Post Falls duo of Wardell (155-11) and junior Austin Funk (152-10) finished third and fourth, respectively.
Murray’s winning effort came on the second of his six throws. His previous best effort was 174-9.
“Just assume everybody was going to beat me,” Murray said of his approach. “I knew I was on top and I knew what I needed to do, but that kid from Eagle got a 7-foot (personal best), and that’s what happens here. You can’t just expect to win.”
Wardell won the 5A shot put with a personal-best toss of 59 feet, 2 inches. Winning the state title climaxed a progression in which he finished seventh as a sophomore and third as a junior.
“I can’t describe it,” said Wardell, whose previous best toss was 57 feet. “I’ve been contending the last couple years and it feels good to finally do it.
“I knew it could go either way with a good mark or an average mark. I got a 2-foot (personal record) so I’m pretty happy with that.”
Gomez, the stellar distance runner, is halfway through her goal of winning back-to-back titles in both the 5A girls 3,200 and 1,600 meters after winning the 3,200 with a time of 10 minutes, 56.97 seconds. Gomez competes in the 1,600 tonight.
“I went in with the goal of a state record but unfortunately due to the wind, those goals were hard to reach today,” said Gomez, who finished more than 24 seconds ahead of second-place Samantha McKinnon of Mountain View. “But I’m happy with the outcome. I feel like it was a good race.”
Gomez was chasing the 3,200 record held by Eagle’s Liz Brandon (10:51.27 in 2009). She also has her sights on the 1,600 record of 4:59.45 set in 2006 by Boise High’s Dana Morgan.
“Same goal — looking for a state record,” Gomez said of tonight’s upcoming 1,600.
Curtis won the 5A boys 3,200 in 9:52.75 despite having recent concerns that he might miss the state meet. He was hit with an illness that temporarily halted his training efforts.
“This feels good because I wasn’t even sure I would be able to compete,” Curtis said. “Two weeks ago, I was sick for a week and I couldn’t run at all.”
Curtis had plenty of strength Thursday while winning the event by more than three seconds ahead of second-place Dallin Farnsworth of Highland.
Morris won the 5A discus with a throw of 122-8, edging Coeur d’Alene junior Madison Seaman (121-4).
This was Morris’ fourth visit to the state meet (the first two with 2A Kamiah), and she finally has a state title to show for her efforts. Her previous best finish was third in last year’s meet.
“Being a state champion has been a goal of mine,” Morris said. “This shows hard work pays off.
“It is kind of just like a dream right now. I started crying when I won. It feels so good ... I just have this big ol’ smile now.”
Morris also finished third in the shot put (36-10 1/2).
Ward shook off a case of the butterflies to win the 4A girls high jump with a leap of 5 feet, 3 inches.
“I’ve been nervous for days,” Ward said. “Ever since I realized ‘I have a chance to be state champion.’ It means I did what I needed to do all season. I hope I can come back next year and my senior year and do it again.”
Other local top-six placers included the following 5A girls competitors: Coeur d’Alene senior Justine Zap (second, shot put, 38-10); Lake City junior Kierstie Shellman (third, pole vault, 10-6); Seaman (fourth, shot put, 36-5 1/2), and Post Falls junior Allison Meehan (fifth, triple jump, 35-11 1/4). Coeur d’Alene’s medley relay team was fifth in 9:53.37.
Among 5A boys, Post Falls senior Nick Hernandez was fourth in the pole vault at 13-6 and Coeur d’Alene’s meter relay team placed third in 8:06.68.
Lakeland senior Latecia Howell finished fifth (35-3) in the 4A girls triple jump.
