Warden softball wraps unbeaten league campaign

KITTITAS - It was simply a formality but the Warden Lady Cougars still had one last regular season game to play before beginning their run toward a Class 2B state softball championship next week.
Having already clinched the North Central Washington South 2B title over a week ago, the Lady Cougars traveled to Kittitas on Tuesday hoping to wrap up an unbeaten campaign in league play.
It took more work they had hoped for but the Lady Cougars (18-4, 15-0) overcame seven errors and a late Kittitas rally to win 13-12 in eight innings.
Warden led 12-4 going into the bottom of the seventh inning before the host Coyotes scored eight times in their last at bat to send the game into extra play.
"We kept on tacking on runs and then the seventh Kittitas rallied," Warden head coach Wes Richins said. "They started their run with three straight hits, and then after a couple walks and a couple of infield hits, they pulled within 12-10 and had the bases loaded with only one out."
Warden gave up two more runs but it could have been worse as they were able to enter the eighth inning with a chance to reclaim the lead.
Narcy Guerra doubled home Bianca Hernandez in the eights and Sondra Platas nailed things down in the bottom half of the inning to secure the win.
Iris Rodriguez started for Warden and pitched into the seventh. She also went 5-for-5 at the plate with a triple, a double, and three RBI. Guerra went 2-for-3 with a triple, a double, and three RBI, and Brenda DeLeon was 1-for-4 with three RBI.
Elizabeth Pruneda and Amanda Elizalde each went 2-for-5.
Warden plays Tuesday at Eastmont High School in East Wenatchee against an undetermined opponent for the district title. They have already qualified for the state tournament in Yakima next weekend.
NOTE: Rodriguez was named the league's Most Valuable player and was joined on the All League first team with Hernandez, Pruneda and Tawnie Gonsalez. Platas, Elizalde and Stacee Villarreal were voted to the second team.
