COEUR d'ALENE - There is going to be a Hindu god on the corner of Fifth Street and Lakeside Avenue come June for passersby to praise and marvel.

Not your persuasion?

A blessed Saint will grace a corner a few blocks away.

Not religious?

A blue heron, bucking deer, stoic bear, moose, musical instruments and more will join the team.

"The diversity," said Joe Sharnetsky, art commission member who spearheaded the newest public art program, Art Currents, "is tremendous."

The listed lineup represents Coeur d'Alene's newest pieces, 15 statues set to go up on Sherman and Lakeside avenues and in City Park the first week of June.

The artwork will be for sale for one year, ranging in price from $1,500 to $48,000. If it's sold and removed, the city would take 25 percent of the price to help cover costs.

It's the inaugural year for the Coeur d'Alene Art's Commission program, and cost $30,000. The city expected to put up 10 pieces, but more responses than anticipated were received. Several of the chosen are from local artists, and a piece from Nebraska is traveling the farthest.

While the program is based on revolving displays, cities with successful similar programs can end up with permanent showcases.

So who's Ganesha?

He's a nearly 8-foot tall elephant and Hindu god who removes obstacles and acts as lord of beginnings.

And Saint Francis of Assisi, soon-to-be at First Street and Sherman Avenue, is known for a holy lot, including the blessing of animals on his feast day.
