COEUR d'ALENE - A Boise doctor completed a mental health examination of the man charged in the Bayview bludgeoning attack of a family in December and determined he is dangerously ill.

First District Court Judge Benjamin Simpson has suspended criminal proceedings against 31-year-old Larry W. Cragun, according to court documents filed in Kootenai County.

Prosecutor Barry McHugh on Friday said the case won't go forward until Cragun understands what's going on in court and can aid in his own defense. His defense attorney couldn't immediately be reached for comment.

Dr. Chad Sombke was ordered by the court to perform the evaluation on Cragun and determined he is unfit to proceed.

Simpson wrote in his order that a progress report shall be filed with the court in 90 days describing his current condition and submitting an opinion on the likelihood of Cragun becoming fit enough to proceed within the foreseeable future.

The court also ordered that Cragun be placed into the custody of the Idaho Department of Correction for care and treatment.

Cragun stands accused of attacking four people with a large hammer and knife in a trailer home next door to his overlooking Lake Pend Oreille. One woman was killed in the attack.

Cragun is charged with several felony counts related to the attack, including one of first-degree murder for the death of 43-year-old Patricia Heath.

She died of massive head trauma.

Heath's mother-in-law suffered serious head injuries, while two others received less serious wounds.

Cragun was indicted by a grand jury in January, and he has pleaded not guilty.

Cragun has previous convictions for drug possession, domestic violence assault, attempting to elude police, drunken driving and battery, according to court records.
