POST FALLS - Devon Murphy's two-run triple in the eighth inning triggered a five-run eighth inning and gave the Rocky Mountain Grizzlies all the momentum they needed as they defeated the Coeur d'Alene Vikings 5-3 in the consolation championship game of the state 5A softball tournament Saturday at Post Falls High School.

Bree Shinall-Kopczynski of Rocky Mountain (19-10) held Coeur d'Alene to one hit through seven innings - a single by Rashell Shaffer with two out in the fifth inning - before the Vikings had three straight RBIs hits in the eighth by Randi Spencer, Kyeli Parker and Elli Tindall.

"It was too little, too late," Coeur d'Alene coach Larry Bieber said. "We didn't produce like we needed to. We only had four runs in three games, and three runs came in the eighth today. That's not exactly what we had in mind."

Lindsie Scholwinski had nine strikeouts for Coeur d'Alene, which finishes 16-9.

"Ski was nails today," Bieber said. "She really did a nice job of hitting her spots today. It's unfortunate we couldn't close it out with a win, but not everyone can win their final game."

Coeur d'Alene graduates four seniors from this year's team.

"It was a good season," Bieber said. "We had a goal of playing on May 21 at the start of the season. We had a lot of distractions throughout the year, but obstacles are what you have when you take your eyes off the target."

"We came into today's game unprepared," Parker said. 'We weren't mentally prepared and were slow-footed on the field. We made it to the second day of the tournament, and we're happy with that - but a trophy would have been nice."

Coeur d'Alene shortstop Jessica Lupinacci will move on to North Idaho College in the fall.

"We played against some really tough teams," Lupinacci said. "But we didn't perform like we should have. It hurts that we're done. I started as a freshman and it went by really fast. This is one of the best teams I've played with and I wish them luck."

"It was a really competitive tournament," Rocky Mountain coach Brian White said. "There were great performances by both pitchers today. It's always nice to come up here. The fields are accessible to the fans and there was some great weather up here."

In earlier action, Hallie Knife had three RBIs for Centennial as the Patriots defeated Mountain View 9-4 in the third-place game. Taurie Pogue hit a three-run home run in the fourth inning for Mountain View.
