POCATELLO - Senior Nellie Makings once again was a thorn in Timberlake's side, tossing a four-hit shutout Saturday as the Kimberly Bulldogs beat the Tigers 4-0 in the third-place game of the state 3A softball tournament at OK Ward Park.

"I'll be glad to see her gone," Timberlake coach Mike Menti said. "I think we've played her three of the four years."

Whitney Carlton hit a three-run home run in the seventh inning for Kimberly (21-5).

Timberlake (19-6) brought the tying run to the plate in the bottom of the seventh, loading the bases before Makings retired the Tigers to end the game.

"We battled the whole way," Menti said. "Not bad - for 21 innings (in three games), we only played one bad inning. I'll take that."

St. Maries pitcher Tia Asbury nearly had a perfect ending to her high school career.

Asbury had retired the first 15 batters she faced on Saturday, but four straight singles and a solo home run by Kimber Choffin in the sixth inning helped push the Diggers past the Lumberjacks in the state 3A tournament consolation game.

"This weekend was the most we've worked her all year," St. Maries coach Todd Bitterman said. "She's our ace and to have her throw 19 innings, it's not typical for us. We asked a lot of her and I was really pulling for her to get the win. It would have been a good way to end the season."

Morgan Cummings walked and scored on a single by Brittany Nelson in the fourth inning for St. Maries, which finishes 11-11.

Choffin had 14 strikeouts for Sugar-Salem (15-5).
